Jim Adams is the host for Song Lyric Sunday. This week’s theme is Garage Rock.
When I first saw the prompt, I immediately thought of UK Garage. This is not about four young teens banging out acoustic rock songs in their dad’s basement. Because this garage is an offshoot of electronic dance, which started in the early 1990s.
I know, get me and my street ways. But I must confess a little bit of UK Garage goes a long way to my ageing ears. But this one track has stayed with me for years. And this is why I’m twisting today’s prompt to my own ends – sue me!
Meet Shanks and Bigfoot, a pair of producers active for about three years, with two albums and a half dozen singles. Only one of which I like, and here it is. Hope you’re all ready to Sing-A-Long!
C’mon everybody, sing along
(I just sing yabba, dee, dum, dum)
Ah, ah, yeah
To the beat, sing along with me
(We sing along yabba, dee, dum, dum)
If you follow me
You won’t be left behind
I can show you a way
A way to ease your mind
Take your lead from me
I’ll tell you what to do
I will teach you a song
A song to see you through
When it’s raining down on me, yeah
I just sing yabba, dee, dum, dum
It’s the sweetest melody, yeah
Come and sing along yabba, dee, dum, dum
We can sing in harmony, yeah
Or we can hum, yabba, dee, dum, dum
Take my hand and sing with me, yeah
Come and sing along yabba, dee, dum, dum
So when you say these words
You feel this glow inside
You are spinning around
You’re on a fairground ride
Everlasting day
For you my butterfly
Go and spread your wings
Now see how high you fly
When it’s raining down on me, yeah
I just sing yabba, dee, dum, dum
It’s the sweetest melody, yeah
Come and sing along yabba, dee, dum, dum
We can sing in harmony, yeah
Or we can hum, yabba, dee, dum, dum
Take my hand and sing with me, yeah
Come and sing along yabba, dee, dum, dum (ooh)
If you stumble, I will sing for you
And my song will always be your friend
When you’re feeling lonely
When it’s raining down on me (raining down on me)
I just sing yabba, dee, dum, dum
It’s the sweetest melody (sweetest melody, oh, yeah)
Come and sing along yabba, dee, dum, dum
We can sing in harmony (in harmony)
Or we can hum, yabba, dee, dum, dum
Take my hand and sing with me (sing with me)
Come and sing along yabba, dee, dum, dum
When it’s raining down on me
(Yabba, dee, dum, dum, yabba, dee, dum, dum)
(Yabba, dee, dum, dum, yabba, dee, dum, dum)
I just sing yabba, dee, dum, dum
It’s the sweetest melody
Come and sing along yabba, dee, dum, dum

Too much New Year cheer, I suspect! But this track is a gentle way to start the day.

I never heard of UK garage, but this is a nice song, Ella.

It is a pretty little tune and about as far removed from (pure) garage music as you can get!

That is clearly my mistake for not knowing enough about music.

You can be forgiven for not knowing about UK Garage – it wasn’t a massive global phenomenon. But your knowledge of other genres is staggering!
