O is for Obsession

The theme for the 2022 A to Z Challenge is the human condition.

BRIAN

My friend’s new girl really rubs me up the wrong way, and I don’t know why. It’s not like she’s a bitch or anything. There’s no under-the-thumb crap from her. She makes him happy, and everyone agrees she’s the best thing that’s happened to Gaz in a long time. Everyone except me.

I have no idea what is it about her that sets me on edge. She doesn’t hold extreme views. She’s neither in your face nor so quiet you wouldn’t notice if she wasn’t there. I’d say she is a genuine and kind person. And funny; she often makes me laugh.

But how do I tell my best mate I loathe the woman he loves and wish they’d never met?

EMMA

I met Gaz when he came for a job interview. He tells people it was worth losing out on the job because he found me instead. That is one of the reasons I love him: he’s a true optimist who always looks on the bright side.

So how do I tell him his best friend gives me the creeps?

Brian is always hanging around, watching my every move and laughing too loudly at my jokes. Sometimes I wonder if I’m on a massive ego trip. And Brian only stares at me funny because he’s too vain to wear his glasses. Or maybe he does want to be my pet stalker?

Whatever his game is: I always make sure I’m never alone with him.
