All the way back to 1964 today with The Temptations and My Girl. This song reached No.1 in both the US and UK, but only No.8 in Canada – Hang your head in shame, Canada!

Written by two members of The Miracles, this is a sweet and soulful ballad with beautiful harmonies. And a strong theme of wanting love over fame and fortune.

The world and its respective partner have covered My Girl, and the song has appeared on many film soundtracks. (I bet it’s also been used in adverts). But nothing can take away the sheer joy of hearing the original for the umpteenth time.

Take it away, lads…

I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day
When it’s cold outside
I’ve got the month of May
I guess you’d say
What can make me feel this way

My girl, my girl, my girl
Talkin’ ’bout my girl
My girl

I’ve got so much honey
The bees envy me
I’ve got a sweeter song
Than the birds in the trees
Well, I guess you’d say
What can make me feel this way

My girl, my girl, my girl
Talkin’ ’bout my girl
My girl
Ohh ohh
Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
Ohh ohh yeah

I don’t need no money, fortune, or fame
I’ve got all the riches baby one man can claim
Well I guess you’d say
What can make me feel this way

My girl, my girl, my girl
Talkin’ ’bout my girl, my girl, talkin’ ’bout my girl
I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day with my girl
I’ve even got the month of May with my girl
Talkin’ ’bout, talkin’ ’bout, talkin’ ’bout
