Song Lyric Sunday: Two Pigs in Containers

The prompt for Song Lyric Sunday from Jim Adams is Bugs and Insects.
The song must contain a reference to bugs or insects in the title or the lyrics.

Welcome to Song-Lyric-Sunday! The song I’ve chosen today is Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. The word “mosquito” is mentioned. But you’d be forgiven for not catching it because this grunge anthem is a wall-to-wall mumble fest.

For years, I thought they were singing I’ve two pigs in containers rather than I feel stupid and contagious. And I’m not the only one with selective hearing, “Weird Al” Yankovic does an excellent parody of both the song and video with a little ditty called Smells Like Nirvana. Fun Fact of the day: the real Nirvana loved it.

I was no longer a teenager back in 1991 when Smells Like Teen Spirit was first released. But I fell in love with its raw energy and bubbling anger. But one thing I don’t love is mosquitos.

When everyone else is prancing about in shorts and t-shirts on a beautiful summer evening, I am the sad sack in long trousers, long sleeves, and a light scarf wrapped around my neck and head. Oh, and not forgetting my socks. If I don’t, then any exposed skin will take on the look of a 3D relief map of the Himalayas. Mosquitos simply adore my Teen Spirit!

Load up on guns, bring your friends
It’s fun to lose and to pretend
She’s over-bored and self-assured
Oh no, I know a dirty word

Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey

I’m worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey

And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, was hard to find
Oh well, whatever, never mind

Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial
A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial

And here is “Weird Al” for your own compare and contrast moment.

The short life and tragic death of Kurt Cobain have been widely covered on other sites and blogs, so I won’t talk about that today, but here is a wiki link for those who want to read more.

  1. Excellent choices! Nirvana and Weird Al both. Fun fact, I was returning from Los Angeles in 2004 and they were on the same flight as us. He was doing a show at Trinity University if memory serves. I wished I had approached him but didn’t want to be an annoying fangirl.
