Song Lyric Sunday – Sunny Afternoon

The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is Days of the Week

Sunny Afternoon by The Kinks was a number one hit in Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK in 1966. And a jolly anthem about loss, taxation, and being an over-privileged twit.

Bit of a mondegreen response to this one. When I first heard this song, I thought they were singing about a lazy SUNDAY afternoon. And that is what I still hear in my head – despite having the lyrics in front of me. Either way, it’s still a fun and quirky song.

The tax man’s taken all my dough
And left me in my stately home
Lazing on a sunny afternoon
And I can’t sail my yacht
He’s taken everything I got
All I’ve got’s this sunny afternoon

Save me, save me, save me from this squeeze
I gotta big fat mama trying to break me
And I love to live so pleasantly
Live this life of luxury
Lazing on a sunny afternoon
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime

My girlfriend’s run off with my car
And gone back to her ma and pa
Telling tales of drunkenness and cruelty
Now I’m sitting here
Sipping at my ice cold beer
Lazing on a sunny afternoon

Help me, help me, help me sail away
Well give me two good reasons why I oughta stay
‘Cause I love to live so pleasantly
Live this life of luxury
Lazing on a sunny afternoon
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime

Ah, save me, save me, save me from this squeeze
I gotta big fat mama trying to break me
And I love to live so pleasantly
Live this life of luxury
Lazing on a sunny afternoon
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime

And simply because it’s barking, here’s a bonus track, with Freddie Mercury channelling the spirit of the 1920s.

I go out to work on Monday morning
Tuesday I go off to honeymoon
I’ll be back again before it’s time for sunny-down
I’ll be lazing on a Sunday afternoon
Bicycling on every Wednesday evening
Thursday I go waltzing to the zoo
I come from London Town, I’m just an ordinary guy
Fridays I go painting in the Louvre
I’m bound to be proposing on a Saturday night (there he goes again)
I’ll be lazing on a Sunday
Lazing on a Sunday
Lazing on a Sunday afternoon

    • Glad it’s not just me! Mind you, I still hear the line “the dogs say goodnight” instead of “the dark sacred night” in Louis Armstrong’s version of What a Wonderful World 😜
